When you’re planning a paving, grading, or utility work project, the right information helps you make a smart decision — and avoid costly mistakes down the road. That’s why everything we publish comes from people who actually do this work, and why we make sure it’s accurate.

Here at Betz Works, we publish about paving, grading, and underground utilities because we do this type of work every day across California’s Central Coast and over the hill in Santa Clara County. This page explains how we make sure what we publish is worth trusting: who writes it, who reviews it, what standards we cite, how often we update, and how we handle mistakes.

Who writes for us

Every page and article on this site is written or reviewed by someone who has done the work in the field, not just researched it online.

Betz Works is a third-generation paving and utility contractor serving Santa Cruz, Monterey, and Santa Clara Counties. Our content is grounded in the same experience that built our reputation: decades of driveways, commercial lots, road repair, culvert and drainage work, and PG&E-certified underground utility projects on the Central Coast.

Technical content is reviewed by the crew leads and estimators responsible for that type of work:

• Asphalt and driveway articles are reviewed by our paving foreman, based on current Asphalt Institute and Caltrans base-and-surface practices.
• Commercial paving, parking lot, and ADA articles are reviewed by the estimator responsible for compliance with the California Building Code (Title 24) accessibility standards.
• Grading, drainage, and culvert articles are reviewed by our grading crew lead.
• Underground utility articles are reviewed by a crew member with the relevant PG&E and DIR (Department of Industrial Relations)

We are licensed by the California Contractors State License Board [CSLB License #: 1098361] and registered with the DIR for public-works and utility projects.

How we research and source information

We write from three sources, in this order of priority:

1. Firsthand fieldwork. What we see on Central Coast jobs every day. When we describe how a certain soil behaves, why a driveway on a slope needs deeper base rock, how long a step takes, or what a property owner should expect, we are describing work we have actually done.
2. Industry standards and specifications. We reference the standards our work is actually built to, most often:
   • Caltrans Standard Specifications for base preparation, asphalt, and grading
   • The Asphalt Institute guidelines for mix, thickness, and compaction
   • California Building Code (Title 24) and ADA requirements for accessible commercial paving
   • Cal/OSHA standards for excavation, trenching, and jobsite safety
3. Government and municipal sources. We link to Caltrans, Cal/OSHA, FEMA, and the county and city public-works departments (Santa Cruz, Monterey, Santa Clara) for anything involving permitting, code, storm/flood guidance, or accessibility.

We do not cite competitors’ marketing pages, AI-written filler, content-farm posts, or any article that cannot point to a primary source.

Our approach to AI

We use AI tools in a limited, supporting role — locating references, drafting outlines, and checking grammar. We do not release AI-generated drafts, and we do not rely on AI to produce pricing, project details, or professional recommendations.

Before any article is published, a member of our team has:

• written and structured the content directly;
• verified it against the specifications above and our own project records;
• submitted it for review by the crew lead or estimator responsible for that work; and
• completed a final review prior to publication.

Keeping content current

We review an article when any of the following occurs:

• a Caltrans specification, building code, or accessibility rule is revised;
• a county or city changes its permitting requirements;
• a completed job changes what we would recommend;
• local market pricing shifts enough to change the ranges we quote;
• a reader reports an error or omission; or
• twelve months pass, whichever comes first.

The “Last Updated” date on a page reflects the actual date of the last review by a team member, not an automated timestamp. An older date means the page was reviewed and left unchanged because the guidance still applies.

What “project” means

Any specific job we describe — on a service page, project page, or blog post — is work our crews performed. When we cite figures, such as our driveway pricing range, those are the ranges we actually quote on the Central Coast, with the site conditions that raise or lower them explained.

To protect our customers’ privacy, we do not publish home addresses, owners’ names, or images that identify a specific person or property without permission.

Advertising and referrals

• We do not run display advertising on our content.
• We do not accept payment to feature, review, or recommend a product, material, or contractor.
• When we name a specific material or product type, it is one our crews use in the field. We receive no commission on any product mention.
• We do not accept undisclosed referral fees from insurers, adjusters, or other contractors. When we help a customer document storm or flood damage for FEMA or an insurance claim, we work for the customer.

Corrections policy

When we publish something inaccurate, we correct it.

To report an error, contact us. Please include the page URL and the specific issue.

Our commitment:

• We acknowledge every correction request within one business day.
• We investigate factual disputes with the crew lead or estimator responsible for that work.
• When a correction is warranted, we update the page, refresh the “Last Updated” date, and note the correction in the footer.

We do not make substantive changes silently. Typos and grammar are corrected without a note; factual changes are always disclosed.

Our commitment

Betz Works is a family-owned, third-generation paving and utility contractor. Our reputation across Santa Cruz, Monterey, and Santa Clara Counties is the reason we have continued to operate for three generations.

Our name and license number appear on everything we publish, and we treat that content the same way we treat a job in a customer’s driveway: we do it correctly, we stand behind it, and we correct it if we get it wrong.
